On Saturday, June 22, 2024, Aoni Production talent agency and Toru Furuya made a joint announcement. They revealed that Furuya would be stepping down from his role as Sabo in the One Piece anime and other characters.
One piece update: Toru Furuya will leave one piece
The agency specifically requested Furuya to step down, and he agreed to do so. This means that he will no longer be voicing Sabo or Toru Amuro in Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed).
In addition, Atlus announced on June 11 that Furuya has been removed from the cast of their upcoming fantasy role-playing game, Metaphor: ReFantazio.
They cited “various circumstances” as the reason for this decision. Atlus mentioned that they will announce the replacement cast member in July, but they did not reveal the character or role that Furuya was supposed to play.
As of now, there is no information on when Toei Animation will announce Furuya’s replacement for the Detective Conan or One Piece anime roles.
Official statement of Toru Furuya
Furuya recently made a public statement about his role in the One Piece anime and expressed his apologies for the trouble he caused in the situation.
The controversy started when a magazine reported on an alleged affair he had with a fan back in May.
Furuya confirmed the relationship and even admitted to some troubling aspects, like raising his hand during an argument and causing the woman to have an abortion.
