Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams has made history by being the first woman to pilot a new spacecraft on its inaugural crewed test flight to space.
Sunita Williams record
She launched on June 5 aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule, accompanied by NASA astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore, from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The mission is known as Boeing Crew Flight Test (CFT). It is a significant milestone in certifying the Starliner for regular crewed flights to the International Space Station (ISS) under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
The success of this mission will establish Starliner as the second private spacecraft, following SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. It is capable of transporting astronauts to and from the orbiting laboratory.
How many days does Sunita Williams live in space?
Williams is an experienced astronaut with two successful space shuttle missions under her belt totaling 322 days in orbit. She is now embarking on another groundbreaking journey in her illustrious career.
During her time aboard the ISS in 2006-2007 and 2012, she made history by completing the most spacewalks (7) and spending the longest time (50 hours, 40 minutes) outside the spacecraft by any woman.
The Starliner capsule is scheduled to rendezvous with the ISS approximately 26 hours after launch. It will transport Williams, Wilmore, and more than 500 pounds of supplies to the space station.
These two will spend over a week in space to conduct tests and validate the system of the starliner.
